AU.

I don’t know anything

Lady Sialeeds,

Autumn almost reached our beloved Falena. Even the well-built fort of Stormfist cannot win against the cool wind of October. I hope the change of weather will not affect you too much.

Things are getting hectic in Port Spinacks especially that this is also an international matter; that I cannot leave this post as soon as I expected. I am so ashamed to leave you alone to handle our wedding arrangements, but I still think that everything will go well in your hands. I believe in your extraordinary taste. For the matter of what should I wear in the wedding, like what I’ve said before, I know that you know what is the best for the both of us.

Love,
Gizel Godwin

***

Dear Gizel,

Let me get this straight. In the last letter, you were saying, “I’m busy. I’ll leave it up to you.”

… I’m scared to imagine our marriage life if you’re already leaving me doing all things right now. You know very well that I’m not going to leave you alone when you got home.

I’ve finished arranging the list of menus with your mother and your chef. I attached the list, in case you really care.

I hope you freeze along with your papers there. This sweater obviously will not help you.

Love,
Sialeeds

PS: You tell Dolph that he <s>should</s> must wear formal clothes in the ceremony. He almost killed the tailor who wanted to measure his size.

***

To Her Highness Lady Sialeeds,

Truly, the breeze of the wind in Port Spinacks is cold. But, what brings Her Highness to present me the product of her handicraft to such a lowly person like me? Really, I don’t know the bundle of wool you ‘secretly’ woven for these past month was for me. I’m so honored. To return your appreciation, I sent you a gift.

As for the list of the cuisines, you’re really considerate to divide the dishes accordingly to each tables’ occupants. As expected from Lady Sialeeds. I don’t know that Martin cook tree, but if you put the menu in there, I believe that he can make them to suit the beavers’ tongue.

As for Dolph, after reading your letter, I personally told him to obey you. By the time you’re reading this, he should be behaving himself.

The sweater is very warm, I don’t want to show it to someone else, I want to keep it for myself, like I’m keeping you from any other men.

Love,
Gizel

***

Gizel,

Are you saying that you’re embarrassed to wear my sweater in front of anybody else? I know it’s ugly, but is it that horrible? Not even your wine could stop me from smacking you when you’re got back.

The tailor has already had Dolph’s size when you’re reading this. And no, Martin doesn’t cook trees, but he’s asking a beaver friend to help him in Beaver’s Cuisine.

Gunslinger Girl: Fratellos (Jean, Marco, Hilscher, Triela, with mention of Alessandro, Petrushka, Rico, Angelica, Jose, and Henrietta)

Definition Redefined

In the eye of her kinds, Petrushka… or Petra was unlike any of them.

Meanwhile, the cyborgs’ partners also knew that Petra’s partner, Alessandro, was rather… unique; in everything, including his ways of handling his little sister.

Triela almost jumped when she saw Petra put a cigarette between her lips after an outdoor training session. Moreover, Sandro was the one who offered the nicotine stick and the fire for the red haired girl.

“Have you gotten used to it?” Triela heard what the former spy asked playfully as he circled his hands around the cyborg’s waist.

Triela looked over to his brother after he felt a pat on her shoulders. “Hilscher, she’s… they’re…”

“Leave them alone.” Hilscher answered. His voice was low. Meanwhile, his eyes were watching Petra who looked shy and reluctant to Sandro persuasive moves.

“But,”

“Jean himself has washed his hands of this problem.” He pointed at the certain leader who pretended not to see the small scene between the new Fratello pair.

“But,”

“Triela,” Hilscher’s sharp call made her mouth to silence, although her eyes still sending silent protests to her brother.

Hilscher sighed. He understood every single word Triela was trying to say to him very well, because he was also as uncomfortable as Triela, every time he watched their newest recruits together.

Just a few days before, he entered Jean’s office to share his complaints about the former spy to their leader. He was greeted by the blonde haired man who with raised eyebrows, asking with a grim voice, “Is it about Alessandro?”

Hilscher then knew he was not alone.

***

Fratello groups worked in their own ways. Although they were given the same role of ‘brothers,’ each one of them ‘fulfilled’ their ways in different matters.

Jean maybe was the leader of the Fratello teams, but he tended to be silent on how the ‘brothers’ handle their ‘sisters’ in the Social Welfare Agency’s second division.

There was a time when he thought Jose was too much in how he managed Henrietta, but in the end, he did not do anything to protest his little brother’s choice of looking at Henrietta as a shadow of Enrika. Henrietta was Jose’s, like Rico to him.

No one could protest how a brother handling his sister. No one could complain how a Fratello pair worked. It was a silent agreement, an unwritten policy.

Apparently, a newcomer named Alessandro had made a number of men in the Second Division broken the policy.

He heard a complaint about how he put a certain piercing in the cyborg’s belly button. They wouldn’t really mind if he not trying to purposely show it off to the public with wearing her indecent dress. The alien metal in her stomach made some cyborg wonder…

Jean was sure that Jose was talking about Henrietta when his little brother explained it to him.

It also appeared that Alessandro was teaching Petrushka to kiss people’s cheek as a greeting. When she practiced that to him, one of the cyborgs was watching the act. The certain cyborg asked questions that made her partner startled.

Marco was somewhat annoyed and sad when he told Jean about the accident.

…and just now, Hilscher protested about how they smoke after a training sessions.

Jean knew that Sandro was trying to teach Petra how to smoke ever since the first time the easy-going Italian stepped his foot in Jean’s office. Jean himself must painfully accept that Sandro had the previlige to do so, especially after the Technical Department had given Petra the permission to smoke.

Each Fratello were different. They had their own methods in working together.

He understood was Alessandro was doing.

Alessandro had been a spy, specially trained to observe and watch over Padania – The Five Republics. He was trying to train Petrushka to be as human as possible, not to be suspected if she had to work undercover.

A cyborg that was also a undercover spy, the second division had never had something like that before.

Cyborgs were strong enough to come back bringing information. The cyborgs loyalty was absolute, they wouldn’t switch sides; but most of them hadn’t had enough stable emotion to be sent into enemy’s side.

Alessandro was trying to make Petra that kind of cyborg that they had never had before.

Smart, but his way was giving the other Fratello teams a disadvantage.

He stared at his master’s wife... Lady Sialeeds, with his master, Sir Gizel; had adopted him to be a member of their family. Precisely, their son.

Actually, Dolph didn’t expect Gizel to forgive him, especially after killing the lady of Godwin family. Not only taking him to his care, Gizel also had been very nice to him. The last part maybe because Sialeeds’ threat of ‘if you don’t treat the poor boy well, I’ll not treat you well in the future.’

As a matter of fact, Sialeeds didn’t need to give threatening remark to Gizel. Maybe because for the ex-killer, Sialeeds’ wishes was Gizel’s command. Gizel ended up very close to the boy. He did not stop in caring for him, he even started to give Dolph his fatherly love. It was more than Dolph ever wanted…

He worshipped Gizel; he would do anything for his master.

Few years later, his master finally proposed his fiancée into marriage with a ‘let’s get married but if only you agreed that we can take Dolph as our son.’

Sialeeds cursed that Gizel had been insane that time, but she then was convinced that she was the one who started to convince Gizel to "give Dolph a more than special treatment" in the first place. She actually didn’t mind to have a teenage son soon after her marriage with Gizel.

A week after being adopted, Dolph still called her with ‘milady’ and Gizel with ‘master.’ Nothing could annoy her as much, except when Gizel was being playful and picking her nerves.

Sialeeds had actually been the one who asked Gizel to wait for Dolph until he opened up and welcomed them as a part of his life, but she lost her patience in the road because of the little teenage devil in front of her. If she complained to Gizel, Gizel would surely come with a winning mockery about how the royal family member licked her own spit.

That was one of the 27 different kinds of true and most-infuriating-Gizels.

In front of him, Dolph looked at her with a slight confused expression. “I’m sorry for being rude, but I do not need new clothes,” and adding with a resolution, “milady.”

If she hadn’t known Dolph’s characters beforehand, she would have slapped his pale cheeks. “Okay, I won’t buy you clothes, but do me a favor, Dolph.”

“Anything, milady.”

“Stop calling me with honorifics. It’s killing me, if you haven’t realized it yet. I’m your mother.”

“But milady…”

“Dolph!” Sialeeds raised her voice and glared at him. “Please.”

Dolph stared at her with no expression.

It didn’t work at all. Sialeeds took a deep breath. She thought she wouldn’t meet anyone more nerve-wracking other than Gizel. But now there he was, their first son, in a complete package called ‘I can make you stressful even without trying.’

She didn’t want to say the next words, but she had no other way to force Dolph for sincerely calling her with ‘mother’. Sialeeds just hoped that Gizel wouldn’t know that she had done what she about to do.

“Dolph, now I want to give you a mission. You must do it perfectly. I don’t want to see any openings. We must pretend that we are real mother and son. You must call me ‘mother’ and act like my real son. If you don’t do it right, you’re a failure to me and Gizel.”

Dolph straightened his back. The words launched smoothly into his brain.

***

Gizel didn’t feel happy at all, especially at the last two weeks after he and Sialeeds adopted Dolph. He didn’t realize it at first because Gizel himself was too busy with senate works. It had been so apparent at the last few days, but he didn’t dare to ask anything to Sialeeds. He didn’t need tips from her about taming Dolph. That would hurt his pride, hard.

A knock to the door. Gizel voiced a permission to enter.

“Excuse me, master.”

Gizel winced at the last single word. “Come here, Dolph.”

When his adpoted son was few steps in front of his working desk, Gizel talked straight to the point. “What are you thinking about? Did you not consider me as Sialeeds’ husband at all?”

“I’m sorry, sir?”

“That's what I meant, Dolph. Why are you still keeping formal distance and calling me with ‘master’ and ‘sir’ while you were acting so intimate to Sialeeds and calling her ‘mother’ at the same time?”

“Because mother told me to do so, so I cannot nothing but to obey.”

Gizel raised one eyebrow, “so, if I told you do so to, would you really do it?”

“Of course, sir.”

This time, his two eyebrows met in confusion. “Would you from now on, Dolph, stop calling me with ‘master’ and start using ‘father instead?”

“If you ordered to do so, sir.” Dolph answered, “Your wish is my command.”

At the last replies, Gizel then realize what was going wrong. He would talk to Sialeeds about it soon. Very soon.

***

Dolph listened from behind the closed doors. He could hear each one of their parents quietly argued and barked at each other with carefully selected sarcasms. He smiled slightly when the quarrel became more intense.

It wouldn’t be so long until Sialeeds gave up with a desperate cry and attempt to leave the room, only to be chased by Gizel to the bed. Gizel’s soothing, then, would be the only one that could calm her down.

It was he had been plotting and how it supposed to be. The last part of his plan would be realized in a mere minutes.

Even before being adopted, Dolph had been under Gizel and Sialeeds' care for almost half of his life. He knew that the two enjoyed themselves the most in the dispute like this. He couldn’t think of giving better wedding gift for them, for giving him the greatest opportunity ever, to be their child.

I played the JP version. I don't know if there's any change in NA version.

01. Open

It was the time for the bird to move from a cage to another; from an already beautiful cage to a more magnificent cage; a cage that all birds outside dreamt to live in. The birds outside also admired how the cage showered the one bird with shining jewelries and elegant silks, while they didn’t realize that the bird could not fly in it. A cage would always be a cage.

Nevertheless, no one would care, because this bird was not meant to fly. This bird was to be in her cage; to be awed, to be respected and to be worshipped by the other birds.

The bird with strong wings, but was never allowed to fly. The bird always wept, in her cage filled with diamonds and satins.

The bird was still crying the morning they opened the door of her cage that led to another. She wasn’t aware there was a hand reaching hers, pulling her, forcing her to stretch, to flap her wings, up to the open sky.

02. Strangers

When she realized it, her feet were already on the ground, on the field she had never seen before. On the grass where there were ancient symbols, runes, drawn in red that smelled like iron. She immediately knew what it was.

“Was that magic?” She voiced, knowing that answer would come from the person who made the drawings on the greens of grass.

“Magic is what some people call it.” A voice replied from her back. “It’s a transportation circle.”

She turned her back, smiling to the man in a dark robe who just had given her a taste of freedom. “Are you the one who saved me, magician?”

“I would prefer to call myself a scientist, an alchemist, for I’ve never made magic nor miracles happen before,” a tone of doubt, “nor I’ve ever been thanked for saving people’s lives before.”

“You just have.” She stepped out from the circle. “You’ve rescued me from making the biggest mistake of my life. My name is Lylia. Is there anything that I can do to repay you, Sir…?”

The hood of his robe covered the glint of surprise in his eyes, but his opened mouth then closed, turning from amazement, wonder, and decision. “I’m what they called with Woltar. I’m here to have a strand of a holy maiden’s hair…before she can be soiled by anything else…” Her shoulders trembled at the words. He continued his words, carefully, “Let’s say for an experiment… I’ll return you to the castle once I got it.”

She breathed fear at his last words. “You can take as many as you like.” A tone of insecurity came into her voice as she caught the sight of the Crell Monferaigne Castle from afar, “but please take me away from here.”

There was only silence as her eyes fought for the fulfillment of her request.

“If you haven’t made the biggest mistake of your life, milady,” he said as she lifted the white veil that was covering her face, and tried not to hold his breath as she did so, “you are certainly doing it right now.”

03. Outside

“Where actually are we going?” He asked hours later, the time when darkness slowly started to creep over the entrance of Crawsus forest, “You actually don’t have any place to go, do you?”

He did not hear any answer from her. He turned and saw awe on her face stopping her from hearing his voice. He decided to ask again as he stepped to her side, “do you know where you are going?”

“Whe… where is this place?” She asked him back. He heard fear, wonder, and excitement written in the tone of her voice.

“So you really don’t know.” He smiled mysteriously, “That’s interesting…”

His last words made her quickly cover her opened mouth with her hands, “I don’t know what you mean. We happen to go to this same direction.”

“We are?” He said with an irony in his voice, “then I’ll have to leave you right here, because, unfortunately, my destination is on that way,” he pointed at the opposite side of her view.

“Wait,” She pulled his dark robe. “I mean…”

“So then, shall I transport you back to Crell Monferaigne castle?”

“No!” Her grip tightened of fear to be caged again inside royal walls, the fear of losing her newly found freedom. “Maybe I do not have any place to go, but I don’t want to go back to that place. Please.”

The same night, a girl with a stained wedding gown entered Salerno Laboratory for the first time; and there she was where she would be until the last month before her death.

04. Entertainment

At the sight of horror in front of his eyes, Woltar decided to ask in a very intrigued tone, “Tell me, milady. Have you never washed dishes? Or… should I suppose, you have ever entered a kitchen before?”

“I’m terribly sorry. I promised that I would never cause you trouble, but…”

“Just tell me what they have taught you in the castle. Maybe I can give you a more appropriate job.”

“Oh,” Her hands nervously rubbed the surface of the plate, greasy from cooking oil although it had been washed, with an unreasonable amount of soap. “They taught me how to pray, read the holy texts, sing hymns,” her sore eyes now looking at the nearly flooded floor, clearly avoiding his sinister sight, “dance, oh I can read and use bow and arrows too!” The last clause was said with a hopeful tone.

“Good for you,” his voice sounded sarcastic. “At least you can fight back if I’m going to kill you.”

She immediately took a step back, cowering.

“Haven’t you been asking what I am doing in my private research room, milady?” A step forward towards her, his voice turned deep. “Do you know what experiment I held in my laboratory? Have you ever wondered about the screams you hear every night?”

She felt an eerie wind rubbing her spine as she shook her head. She knew that the magician was well aware of the source of her sleepless nights. In fact, the dark circles on her eyes were the results of it.

“Those were mandrakes.” A playful smirk and a satisfied smile on his face, seeing her dreaded face. An enjoyment of watching her reactions. “I planted some near the laboratory too. You should watch out, don’t pick any of them by accident.”

She was still in a state of shock when he took her shaking hands, “Here, at least you should learn how to clean the mess.”

05. Romance

She had forgotten about the wedding dress she wore on the first night in Salerno. The second day there, the alchemist had brought her a peasant dress he bought in the nearest village. Now, the long-forgotten wedding dress is covered in almost one year of dust.

“How about washing and selling it for OTHs?” She asked Woltar, the moment she had found the wedding dress again.

“Are you sure?” Woltar questioned her back, after taking his eyes off the research papers and rune maps, lying on the table in front of him. “People would recognize the wedding dress of Crell Monferaigne’s royal bride. Why do you think I refused to sell your jewelries to the stores, in the first place?”

His words silenced her in realization.

“We, at least, I, as far as I’m concerned, don’t need OTH that much, unless you have something you want, milady.” His eyes darted back to the lines of alphabets of his research. “With that much money, you can travel to Dipan or Villnoire before you get tracked, and lead a happy life there.”

“If that’s the case,” a tremble in her face, “I’d rather keep the dress.”

“Yes, you probably want to wear it when you return to the castle.” His voice was without interest. He stole a glance to see her reaction. When hurt and fear colored her eyes, he was not all surprised. “Of course I was not serious, milady. I can give you OTH, as a payment for taking care of this place, although I’m not sure it will cover the price of the dress.”

“A little is alright,” She relaxed when she saw his smile. “I just need some to buy some materials.”

A week later, Lylia gave him a dark violet robe that matched his eyes; an anniversary gift for saving her life the year before. He gave her a kiss on her forehead as gratitude. To his own amusement, this act rewarded him a deep blush on the maiden’s cheek.

The next year, Lylia presented him, a daughter.

06. Anger

It had been almost six springs since she could free Salerno Laboratory from dust with her own two hands and hard work;
Five springs since she could make delicious dinner for two;
Four springs since they welcomed another soul in their family;
Three springs since their daughter spoke the word, “Father,” and walked to her husband;
Two springs since he had completed the cure for an unknown illness that had attacked an isolated village for seven long years…

A spring since he said, he would never let her go back to Crell Monferaigne, and she answered that she would not return, because she had found her life, there, at Salerno. Five springs marked the fifth year of their meeting. They were thankful they had found each other.

A week since she saw that woodcutter in the deep forest of Salerno.

A minute since she heard an unfamiliar noise, shouts came behind the entrance of the Salerno Laboratory. Sounds of hands slamming the door. More shouts. More screams. Her daughter cried soon after.

A second since she realized what it was.

Her husband came, “The Crell Monferaigne royal army.” His expression was unreadable. “It seems that they had come to take you.”

An emotion that she had felt countless times before entering Salerno, came, visiting her heart once more. Anger opened an invisible door to her inner self; crushing her heart, burning her stomach, and scattering her brain; trying to make a place for itself.
She was about to vomit rage. Yes, she had to do it. Or else, it would eat her, whole.

07. Opportunity

He touched her hands, giving a reassuring grip, but fury paralyzed her from returning his grip.
He embraced her, whispering her name to her ears, but her ears failed to hear his voice. He was saying something, but her fear didn’t let her understand what he was saying.
He was letting her go from his arms, but her weakness didn’t let her chase him.

He left her in the room with their still crying daughter.

She stared blankly at the closed door, still didn’t understand what was happening. Emotions were numbing her senses.

A quake on the laboratory took her consciousness back. She could hear her husband’s calls of spells and magic, no, alchemy. He was fighting back… He wouldn’t return her to Crell Monferaigne. He wanted her there. She smiled when she thought it.

“They sent a legion of Crell Monferaigne soldiers here… to tell you the truth, I’m not sure that I can beat all of them, but I won’t let you go that easily…”

… And she just couldn’t stand there. She was going to help him.
She stood up and reached the door, only to realize that it was locked…from outside…

“I will go. You stay here and wait for me, and if…”

She started to hit the door with her hands, remembering the silent words he had said a few moments ago.

“…if I don’t come back, go with them. Do not tell them the truth; just say what they want to hear from you… Play their game… for you and for our daughter…”

Her hands started to bleed as she scratched the wooden door, screaming his name.

“Both of you still have a road to walk on…”

She cried at every blasting sound she heard from behind the door.

“I’m happy I could walk in the same path as you, Lylia…”

08. Ocean

A few hours later the door was opened. She didn’t look up, because she knew that her husband wouldn’t be the one who assure freedom for her. Freedom was long gone the moment she heard the last sound of blast followed by footsteps of metal greaves on the hall.

“Your Highness!” They called with relief. “Thank goodness you’re alright!”

She closed her eyes, restraining anger and sadness. She had stopped crying once she realized she was the only one left for their daughter. She barely nodded.

Knights in armor approached her, offering a bloody hand. “We came to rescue you. You can relax now. We’re going back to the castle.”

“Yes,” She looked at the hand, the hand that had probably killed Woltar. She took it, trying not to jump and strangle the knight. Her knees were shaken as she stood. Her daughter’s hands were clutching tightly to her skirt, crying, ‘Mother! Mother! Where’s father!? Where are we going!?’

The soldiers, especially the knight who had her hand gave a questioning glance. She remembered the last words of her husband, trying not to say the next line with a vigorous intent to kill the knight. “My child,” she answered, her tone was unexpectedly sad and lonely, “from that…” she held her breath praying for his forgiveness, “bastard…”

The soldiers look surprised, but they didn’t say anything.

“Shall I…?”

Lylia’s eyes widened when she saw the knight’s hands reaching for his sword. She immediately added, “But I came to have attachment with her. She was my only friend here… Whoever the father is, she’s still my child…” The last clause was said truthfully.

…but the child could only glance back at the mother with betrayal and disbelief. She stopped crying and her hands dropped from her mother’s skirt.

Lylia avoided her daughter’s eyes. She walked away and said, “Where’s he?”

The knight sheathed back the sword. “Come, milady, I shall escort you to the devil’s last standing, so you can at last rest in peace.”

Her daughter followed her back, half pushed by the soldiers behind her little body. She silently prayed that her last precious living being in Midgard wouldn’t be hurt by anyone. Her prayers stopped when the knight halted her in front of a scene.

… She almost screamed, wailed the cry that no one ever cried.
… She almost poured the tears that no one ever shed.
… But she didn’t.
… She looked behind her back, hoping that her daughter didn’t see it.
… But Lydia did.

Her daughter screamed, wailed the cry that no one every cried, poured all the tears that no one ever shed; all the terror that Lylia had drank back. Lydia rushed to the remaining, scattered bodies of her father. She slipped because of sadness; fell into the ocean of blood…

09. Picky

Six years after the last time, the king of Crell Monferaigne saw Lylia, the shy holy maiden from a noble family. That time, the girl was innocent and filled with purity. He believed that he could give everything he had to make her smile.

She had been stained when she came back with a little girl she called daughter; but he still believe he could give all the support to cheer and lift her spirit, after six years being kidnapped by a dark wizard.

Unfortunately, the former maiden of Freya was now hard to please. No silk, no diamonds, no music, no words could take her empty gaze off the window.

This was unfair, the king thought. The king had been patient all his life to marry the girl, and the wizard did not only take her virginity, the alchemist even traumatized her.

She only need time, said one of his advisor.

The king nodded at the answer. If it took time to have her attention back to him, then he shall give it.

But even patience had its limit…
A month later, the king’s tolerance had come to an end…

10. Flying

The bird ran from the reaching hands. She used up the last of her breaths to reach the end of her cage.

The king’s eyes were hungry, and she knew she wouldn’t stay untainted by anyone other than her beloved savior. She cried. She would rather die than taking the humiliation. She wouldn’t have a face to meet Woltar in the other world.

The king was calling her and she retreated, until the end was very near.

Yes, she would rather die.

The bird couldn’t fly, not without her lover’s hands, but she’d rather meet her end than falling into polluting hands.

She jumped…

She saw the king’s surprised face.
She heard her distant daughter’s cries.
She felt her husband’s invisible hands.

… Then the bird was flying to meet her end.

She stopped several times to reply the calls of the nobles and the senate members, who then greeted her ‘good afternoon’ and asked one or two diplomatic questions. Their beautiful wives and daughters politely commenting on how beautiful Sialeeds was that night, and continued to drag her into a what-they-thought a high class ladies talk.

He remembered the nights when he and Sialeeds shared their duties in royal balls and parties. Gizel would take care of the conversation with nobles and senate members, and Sialeeds should bear with the ladies talk. Either one of them, then, would make an excuse of leaving the conversations. That strategy had never failed in the past.

Since that eventful night, they had never come to a party in pair anymore. She had to handle all of the chatting by herself. He always watched from afar while she did all the work by herself.

He had learned how to restrain himself from taking a step by her and offering his arm.

It was hard at the beginning, but he eventually mastered it through years of practice.

He learned how to be patience while all the events in life were like a ride on a roller coaster. He was excited, cried when he first felt the thrill of joy, sadness, and disappointment. But he then knew that even rollercoaster had its own rail. All he had to do was pay attention to the road ahead, use the turn of events for his own goal, never to break down in emotions again.

He had restrained himself from doing many things he wanted to do, for the sake of waiting better chances. He held himself from showing excitement of manipulation.

When he finally got a hold of the arts of self-control, he realized that Sialeeds had already been an expert in it. Of course, he then thought, as expected from her.

The current Gizel watched as Sialeeds calmly excuse herself from the crowd.

Every time he saw her, he was reminded why he adored her so much. Sometimes, his heart would slip from the coldness, asking to no one that he would give everything he had right now just for a chance to be with her, like their old engagement days. Then he was aware that he was asking for it because it would never happen. If there were some possibilities where it could happen, Gizel would not just stand and begging to… God, he would be trying to make it come true.

He slightly bowed when he felt Sialeeds’ dropped her gaze on him, giving her a sardonic smile. Sialeeds returned his greetings with a brief, almost crude nod before trailing her ways to Queen Arshtat at the throne.

Because there was no way for him to return to those days, the only thing Gizel could do was only playing the impossible imaginations in his head, behind his cold mask.

危機一髪 // Critical Moment for Gensui 108 Themes #44
Disclaimer: Konami’s
Characters: Kyril, Andarc, HeroIV, Kika
Timeline: Rhapsodia (Suikoden Tactics)

“Argh!”

He recognized the voice.

Kyril turned around. “Andarc!”

A water dragon had landed a final blow to Andarc, putting Andarc in a condition where he was not available for another round of fight. Andarc eyes watched Kyril for a while, asking for a permission to retreat. Kyril’s golden eyes did not giving Andarc with an answer. They were giving Andarc more doubt.

Finally, Andarc took his sight away from Kyril and retreated. From the entrance of the Flowing Chamber, Kyril could hear Yu giving orders to Carrie to fetch the newest wounded from the current fight.

Kyril was confused, shocked. Andarc was a lightning elemental magician. He never thought that the older man would be wounded, even pushed to retreat in a battle of Flowing Chamber.

He counted that with Andarc retreating, his side was left with few people, including Ornela, Kika, and the leader from the last Island Nations battle. None of them were in the best of condition to fight. Even Ornela was gasping for air to breathe. All the magicians had retreated several turns before Andarc, and that left the current party with no healers and healing items.

He had considered switching one of the remaining fighters with Yu or Carrie, but that would be a minus to the offense, since there were still two water dragons and several other monsters, including two water spirits.

Kyril, himself, was not in his strongest state. He was a fire-elemental fighter. A water-elemental had passed by and changed the comfortable fire field he had been standing into a water field. He was itching to give the monster a nice and painful deathblow, but it was to far from his reach. Not far from him was a skeleton archer who when its turn came, it would give an attack for him… and avoiding the up-coming attack was unlikely. Oh, he wished to wear a Godspeed Anklet (plus a speed ring) at a time like this. At least, it would take his turn to come faster, and he would have moved away from them and make a nice and wide fire elemental field for himself.

But no. He couldn’t switch anyone with Yu or Carrie, or any other supporting fighters. He didn’t wear any Godspeed Anklet. Plus… he and his team were suffering.

He just couldn’t give up. He wouldn’t.

He needed to be strong.

He remembered when he had to force his team to pull back from the last fight at the Imperial City of Graska. He saw, no, He could imagine Iskas was smirking at Kyril’s defeat, at his weakness. Kyril himself could still imagine how Corselia cried at his father’s new… arrghhh…

It made Kyril remembered the time when the Evil Eye did the same thing to his father. It took a long time for Kyril to stand back and be what he was right now. It took more tears and pain for realization and knowing the truth after that… and someone now was using the Evil Eye for himself. That someone was laughing at Kyril’s incapacity.

He couldn’t just retreat right now. He couldn’t go back to the entrance of the ruins and go back down to the Flowing Chamber again. It would take too much time… while he didn’t have anymore time…

“Arrghh!”

Another voice.

It took Kyril away from his own thinking. He then realized that Ornela had made a decision to retreat after a critical blow from a water spirit. She didn’t even ask for Kyril’s permission to leave. She had already known that she wouldn’t receive any.

It was getting tougher.

“Pull back, Kyril!”

Kyril turned his head to the voice. Kika was watching him with a determined glare.

“We will kill ourselves if we stay here for anymore turn.” Her voice was not shaking, although her body was, because of exhaustion.

“But---!”

“Kyril.” A call for his name stopped him from saying anything. Kyril’s eyes moved to the leader of the war of the Islands Nations. His bluish eyes were calm as always. He smiled. “It’s time for us to retreat.”

“He’s right.”

Kyril bit his lip. He tried not to remember Iskas’ smirking face when he took an escape talisman from his pocket.

***

リーダー// Leader for Gensui 108 Themes #32
Disclaimer: Konami's
Characters: Kyril, HeroIV
Timeline: Rhapsodia, after Critical Moment

Kyril tried to regret it, but every time he looked as his hands he felt weakness. He took a deep breath and sent his back to a softness of a bed he hadn’t felt for a while.
Yohn was sitting, watching him from a chair not far from him. She was serene and composed, as usual. She offered him what he took as a comforting glance. Kyril could only smile sadly.

A knock came to the door.

“It’s me.” His voice. The same voice who asked him to retreat earlier in the afternoon. The least person he wanted to talk to right now. “King Lino just send me a giant crab to my room. Do you want to join me in dinner?”

Kyril looked at Yohn, asking for a help, preferably to send the boy away from his room. But Yohn just shooed Kyril, as if she was supporting the other man’s idea of having a dinner of giant crab.

***

King Lino seemed to appreciate the former war’s hero very much. It was proved from the size and contents of the room he was sleeping in, and the dinner the king had presented to him. It was not only a giant crab, but roast beef, soup, buns, and some food that would take ten more adults to finish.

“Take a seat.”

Kyril obeyed and sit on one of the chairs.

“Eat.” The other boy smiled as he said that.

Kyril blinked. “Huh? All of these?”

“Of course. You needed more than I do.” He then added. “Believe me.”

“I… am not in a mood for eating…”

The boy raised his eyebrows.

“I… don’t feel like eating… I… I…” Kyril’s words met silence for a while. “I hate retreating… I don’t like being a weak leader… I… I need to be strong.”

“Being a good leader doesn’t mean to be strong in physical strength.”

“But they’re counting on me! Corselia was asking me to help her! I offered him help! I promised almost everybody to destroy the Evil Eye! How can I fulfill their hopes if I am weak?”

“So you prefer to sacrifice their lives in order to fulfill their hopes?” The bearer of Rune of Punishment asked back.

“What?”

“What’s the use of fulfilling the hopes of the man who die?” He put another question in front of Kyril’s plate. “Iskas would be happier to know if you lost half of your allies before coming to him.”

Kyril didn’t answer. His head ducked, eyes seeing the sweating palms sitting on his lap.

“A good leader is,” Kyril raised his head and looked at the other boy when the later said it, “a leader who knows when is the time to attack, and when to retreat. Somebody who sacrifices himself, not sacrificing the whole army; who act for the sake of his people, not for winning a battle.”

Kyril drowned into silence, trying to absorb what the former hero had said.

“Let us think while eating. The poor crab is waiting for us to eat it while it’s still hot,” the boy broke the silence, eagerly taking everything that his plate could hold.

“Do you…” Kyril started the conversation again after the late leader had taken the third round of food in the last five minutes of silence. “Have you ever retreated in the last battle?”

The other boy smiled. “Countless times, Kyril. Mitsuba smacked me every time I did.”

Especially because it was only months after the end of the war, and they were all busy with rebuilding the whole Queendom and its system.

It was because his brother’s romantically had voiced his love to his bodyguard and youngest member of the Queen’s Knights, Lyon. Even though he still loved Lymsleia as a sister, the thought that his brother was now someone else’s was disturbing her.

Not only her brother, Miakis now also had a man she loved. Maybe true that Miakis still gave her full attention as the Queen’s bodyguard and treated her the same, but Lymsleia couldn’t help to imagine that when Miakis went to sleep, Lymsleia wouldn’t be the only one Miakis think about.

She hated to think she had to share his brother and Miakis with someone else.

How Lymsleia hated the war. How she hated the Godwins for making everything change. How she hated them to use her as a pawn in this whole revolution in Falena. How they took everything from her… her mother, her father, and then her brother and Miakis.

Why did everything have to change?

…but she then thought about everything from the start. If there hadn’t been war, Lordlake would still be suffering. The beavers and dwarfs would still cast themselves away from humans’ problems, even though they were also citizens of Falena. The Queendom would still be a court for the Senate members and Nobles to play on.

Shouldn’t she be thankful because the Queendom she had to rule was turning to a better place?

Then, when everything was in peace, why she felt so lonely? So alone?

Had her mother felt the same when she sit on the throne wearing the crown for the first time?

…maybe not, because she had her father at her side. A Commander of Queen’s Knight that truly loved and cared for her. A man that purely love her for all she had been, not lusted for her being a Queen.

Her Knight to her never had been any of Ferid to Arshtat.

Her current Knight would never too.

She held her tears of self-pity, cries for being alone. She wanted to feel how it would be if she had someone at her side, that would support her and be at her side every night and day and give her the care and love that no one had ever present before.

Like her father to her mother, like Lyon to her brother, like “he” to Miakis.

She might be too young to understand any of it, but she wanted so much for anyone to take her out from her current state.

But she had to hold on for now. If everyone was changing, she had to stop being spoiled and bear everything like when she had been in Gizel’s custody. Oh yes, she would wait.

… And it would be her greatest gift it the time really came…

***

“You’d better say goodbye to your current position and get another job, brother!” Lymsleia said out loud the next day.

The prince, Lyon, Miakis, and the other people present at the Audience Room that day blinked at Lymsleia’s sudden outburst.

The silence was finally broken by Lymsleia’s cough and she continued with a proud voice, “I wanted to say that but I’d like you all still as you are now.”

Even with the next words, the prince still looked confused. Lyon laughed half-heartedly, while Miakis commented and warned at her Queen’s strange behavior with still ever playful smile. Lymsleia treasured them all.

Maybe staying like this for a little bit longer wouldn’t hurt her. So Lymsleia thought.

It should have been an ordinary drink until Roog asked him, “So, you’re going out with Miakis, hmm?”

Rahal wasn’t surprised. He knew that Roog would know somehow, either from Rahal himself, or from another friend. Apparently, it had been the second, because Rahal had wasted weeks for thinking about how he should tell Roog. He carefully sipped his drink, “Who told you?”

“Hmm, Lance told me when I visited him,” the other answered before continuing, “He knew from Lun, who knew from Kisara, who knew from Raja, who knew from Maroon, who knew from Toma, who knew from Goesch, who knew when he visited Sol Falena from the Prince himself, who knew from Lyon, who knew from Queen Lymsleia, who found out from, well, Miakis, herself.”

Rahal held his breaths. This sounded bad.

“The strange thing is, I’m living in the same roof with the last four, and they didn’t give me any damn clue, even Miakis! And you know what? When I found out about it, all people seemed to know, even the DoReMi elves!”

“Wait. The DoReMi elves?”

“They’re visiting the town. Cornelio’s orchestra is going to have a concert tomorrow. They sent their regards to you, you know. Oh yeah, Cornelio’s the one translating.” Roog replied nonchalantly as he finished a glass of alcohol in a single gulp. “Dang, since when, man?”

After few seconds of silence, Rahal answered, “Well, since three weeks ago, when I visited Sol Falena.”

“Three weeks!” Roog’s hand slammed to the table. “There’re too many chances in those three weeks that you could use to tell me. And I thought we’re the best of pals!”

“I don’t see why we’re not.”

“Uh, hello?”

“I apparently still love my beautiful face. Who knows you wouldn’t punch me in the face in the spot if I told you.”

“Rahal, do you know how much I want to punch you and beat you down so Miakis won’t recognize you anymore right now?”

“Okay, I give up.” Rahal finally said. “I’m afraid that you’d be upset if you know that I’m courting her. Since the three of us have been so close, I thought…”

“Wait a second, you thought that I like Miakis the same way you do?”

“Yes.”

“Man, I really want to punch you to bits right now.” Roog hissed.

Rahal looked at Roog for a moment before realizing. “Oh… you don’t?”

“What do you mean I don’t!? I should be the stupid one right here!” Roog yelled but quickly lowered his voice down after noticing that the whole bar was looking at them. “I thought we all are just friends! It’s not my fault if I don’t know that you consider her more than that… oh yeah, and you’ve never told me before, haven’t you?”

“No, I haven’t.” Rahal then went back to his drinks. “You see, I just realized that I want her to be more than just friends three weeks ago.”

“Okay, three weeks ago you realized you loved her and you went to ask her that same moment?” Roog eyes’ widened in disbelief. “Until a second ago, Rahal, I thought you were the one who think before you acted, and I was the one thinking with my muscles and hormones!”

“Roog, believe me, I’ve thought before asking her.”

“How long did you think? Ten minutes?”

“Actually, it’s five.”

“Damn, Rahal. You are crazy!” His fist slammed the table for the second time. “Didn’t you put in your consideration that Miakis could have beaten you into pieces right in the spot?”

“I did, Roog, I did.” Rahal answered. “If you want to know the complete story, Miakis asked me to duel that time. He would put me into consideration if I can win it.”

“How the hell did you win from Miakis?”

“Not from Miakis, from a guy who didn’t want pay his bills at the restaurant.”

Roog’s face looked very confused before hesitantly saying, “That… must be an easy win.”

“It was.”

They looked at each other for a while. Roog then grinned as he said, “she must have liked you so much.”

“I thought about that too, it seems that I was not blinded by my confidence after all,” Rahal smiled. “Thanks, Roog. I’ll treat you tonight.”

“You better be! Master, bring us the most expensive drink!” Roog called out, completely ignoring Rahal’s scream of ‘wait a second!’ and added, “Give them for the whole people in here too!”

Roog’s turned and faced the cheering people, “Guys, cheers for Rahal and his new girlfriend!”

Rahal almost thought he’d like Roog punching his face more than sucking almost half of his savings that night… but he then noticed a flicker of sadness in his friends’ eyes.

Rahal closed his eyes in understanding and again drank from his glass. He would let his best friend do what he wanted to, tonight.

***

The next morning, Rahal’s room was attacked by an angry Flail. Apparently, she just heard from Rania (who had heard from the DoReMi elves) that Rahal now had a mate. She grinked and gronked (complained) why her partner didn’t tell her beforehand.

Rahal held his head while listening to Flail’s protests (who also passed his sister’s in the process) because he was still drunk from the previous night. He didn’t want to debate that it was Flail’s fault to not bother him while she was caring for her egg.

Well, it was his too, because he obviously didn’t tell her when he was visiting her nest… but he was sure he would also have the blessings from his dragon horse and his sister…

He turned to his back, and saw what he was expecting, Miakis running towards him. It had been years since the certain childhood friend left Sauronix in order to become a Queen’s Knights, but he had noticed that Miakis barely changed.

“If you’re coming, you at least should greet your childhood friend before leaving again!” Miakis glared at him when she reached few steps distance from him.

“On the contrary, I was going to the Parliament Building because they told me you’re on an errand there.” Rahal reduced that gap with walking a few steps. “Apparently you’re not… Hmm, that’s strange.”

“I just got back,” her glare disappeared and a grin plastered her face.

“That figures,” Rahal replied the grin with a smile. “Care for a walk?”

“C’mon! I’ll show you around!” She obliged, taking his one hand almost as if pulling him. “So that means Flail is here, too isn’t she? Where is she now? You don’t leave her in the port just like that, do you?”

Not only the outside, Rahal realized that her inside didn’t change at all. Not that he minded. “Fortunately, Flail is going to be a mother soon, so I don’t want to force her to leave her egg alone, even if I can. I came here by boat from Spinacks.”

“Flail is what? Wow! It’s only been a few months since the war’s finished, now she’s going to have a baby!”

“The males have started this ‘sorting’ as soon after the war’s ended.” Rahal told her. “They actually wanted it to sort sooner but then that incident came.”

“Ah, that’s too bad… but she’s alright right now, right? Is her mate some dwaggie-horse I know? Ah, that’s the Parliament Building.” Miakis suddenly pointed as they walked pass the front of the mentioned building. “Was the Senate Building. They renamed that since the system’s changing...”

Rahal sighed. “I’m not a fool, I completely aware of that, Miakis, thank you. And didn’t Roog tell you the reason why Lance has left Sol-Falena for a while?”

“What for?” She watched Rahal’s face changed. She then voiced in disbelief. “Don’t tell me he mated with her!? Oh that Roog, I’ll kick his ass when he got back from Beaver Lodge tomorrow!” Miakis almost jumped in excitement and anger. “But I bet they’re going to have a cute baby, I can tell.”

“Of course it’s going to be beautiful like the mother.”

Miakis laughed at his last comment. Her laughter didn’t change too. Miakis was like what she had been when they were a child.
The Falena Queendom may have changed, Flail may have grown into a mother, and he himself may have turned into an adult, but Miakis would still be the same old Miakis. Rahal was grateful for it.

“And women in Sauronix… you don’t choose any of them for yourself?” She asked it with the same playful tone she always had since years back.

“Please,” Rahal voiced displeasure. “If any of them is more beautiful than me, I won’t hesitate. Thankfully, none of them are.” His lips preformed a smile as Miakis greeted his words with another laugh.

“Here, here,” Miakis gave him a pat at the back. It felt the same like what she always gave them back then, only they had been on the head. Well, it had to be too childish if she had given the same pat in the head in front of public, but if she really had… he wouldn’t mind…

“Have you eaten? There’s this new restaurant in Sol Falena. It has a menu for Sauronix food.”

“I think I didn’t come all the way for another Sauronix taste.”

“Oh. Let’s get the usual, then. I mean the restaurant that I always went to when we’re out to the city. It has this delicious Sol Falenan dish that you’d die for.”

“That sounds good.”

Rahal followed her as she talked more about the places they passed, and the change in the capital itself. He looked as his Miakis eyes when she spoke… they shone as like they had always been.

Wait. His Miakis…?

When the word unconsciously popped into his mind, he started to wander if he really wanted Miakis would always stay like that… if he really wanted that Miakis and him stayed as childhood friends. He knew that he was grateful that Miakis remained the same. But he didn’t expect that Miakis would stay like that in the future. It wouldn’t be so long until a man took her heart and who knew if Miakis still gave Rahal the same treatment like she’d always given her.

He would hate the man. He didn’t sure if Roog would too, but Roog would give the man something to teach before Rahal gave his, with his own way.

Would she also change if he met this ‘more beautiful’ woman than he was searching and marry her? …but then again, he wouldn’t like any female treat him like or more than Miakis always did.

He almost groaned when he brought them all together in a conclusion. He was most afraid of what Miakis would do to him if this turned out bad… and he was also frightened of what Roog would do to him if this turned out good…

It’s the time for him to make this relationship go a little bit further.

She didn’t do it out of arrogance, but she did it because she didn’t trust his kind… every single one of them.

He was not an exception.

But if the other noble backed off every time Sialeeds saw through them and mocked them in her own graceful way, Gizel would not. He would participate and play her game. He would always reply her with clever ways so Sialeeds would not be the one winning in the end.

In the end, that was the key to make them get along very well. Very well indeed, that it had been a sign to the royal family to engage Gizel and Sialeeds.

The royal engagement didn’t bother either of them. Even after it, his lady’s attitude didn’t change at all, much to his joy. As a matter of fact, Gizel was quite pleased that he was officially the one closest to the one he adored. He didn’t need to search her face in the parties because he would always come as her escort.

She was wild and dauntless. When she visited Stormfist, she would drag him away from castle and force him to enter Western Woods with her, despite Gizel’s warning that she shouldn’t be away from her guards.

Seeing her daring acts in the forests, Gizel had said once, “I finally understand why a lady as beautiful as you, Lady Sialeeds, did not have any lad who can capture your heart. It seems that our engagement was Her Highness the Queen’s act of desperation, fearing that you would grow old alone without a husband.”

“Are you saying that you’re interpreting my adventurous side as ‘wild’?”

“You must remember that you should restrain yourself from dangerous acts that could make you get hurt, Lady Sialeeds.”

“Nonsense.” She snorted. “And I don’t need a cowardly husband. You might as well back away and return to your comfortable castle if you’re scared.”

“True, I’m scared,” Gizel smiled, “I’m scared of losing you.”

Sialeeds' eyebrows met in irritation. “Would you stop annoying me, and if you’re really scared of seeing me dying, clear the way for me, starting from that ugly Creeper over there.”

“As you wish.”

And the days of their engagement continued, neither of them complained about it. He would often visit her in Sol Falena, and she would too, to Stormfist… or more to the Western Woods in Stormfist. The royal family, and especially, the Godwin, had seen this act as a good start for their future.

Surely Sialeeds was very surprised when one day Gizel asked, “can I have a permission to kiss you, Lady Sialeeds?”

After a moment of a horrified look, Sialeeds finally said, “but you’re not even seventeen.”

Gizel blinked once before saying, “so cannot I kiss you before I’m seventeen, milady? I don’t know that kind of rule exist before. And we’re engaged for one and a half year already, isn’t it strange if I’ve never kissed you before?”

Sialeeds knew that Gizel with determined eyes was not someone she could win from in an argument. She grunted and said, “Cheek. More than that, I’ll tear you from limb to limb.”

“I still want to keep on living until I’m married and have children, thank you very much.” He said as he took a step closer to Sialeeds.

Sialeeds shut her eyes tightly when his face came closer. She jolted slightly when his lips brushed her cheek for a two seconds kiss. Gizel was actually surprised as he raised his face and found Sialeeds’ face blushed in a deep pink color.

She was very cute, he thought. And it was the first time he realized that he had fell in love with the woman he adored so much. Seeing her face, Gizel was also aware that he had the potential to make Sialeeds love him as much.

After that, Gizel decided that he would treat Sialeeds with more respect. With more care so the girl realized that Gizel was not only a friend, but also a fiancé, a future husband, and eventually… her lover. If she only expected a kiss in the cheek, he would give her no more, until the time finally came for them to confront their feelings. They would be husband and wife in the future… so waiting for a while before stepping to the next level would not hurt any of them.

He would keep her precious so she wouldn’t see any man other than him. If their relationship could start out smoothly, their love would stay strong until their marriage, and after… Their love would be strong, it would not be disappeared; it would never die.

Half a year after, his dream shattered into pieces.

The pleasure defeated his other feelings, like confusion; so that when he’d seen Nei and she had seen him, the urge of having simple talk about simple things and current affair was stronger than questions about their backgrounds…

They had talked about the weather, Nadir’s plays, or development of the war. When they started to share opinions, Roland hadn’t been surprised that Nei comments’ on several things were not too different from him. After all, they were elves.

When Roland felt that it was finally the right time to ask, he did. “Why did you leave the forest?”

Nei stared at him for a while.

Roland didn’t respond to the stare. He had prepared for a blank answer from Nei. There were rarely elves who decided to leave for away from their home. Elf was a creature of the forest. Forest was like an air they needed to breathe. Towns like Vinal del Zexay or Budehuc were like pollutions for them.

If she hadn’t left by her own choice, it meant that she was cast away by the people. Being cast away from the forest was a penalty of a crime that no elf wanted to receive.

“If I answer that, would you answer the same question too, Sir Roland?”

Roland felt silent for a while, before answering, “of course.”

“Then, I guess I’ll answer.” Nei smiled. “And it’s free for you if you feel disgusted of me, after you listen, Sir Roland.”

It wouldn’t surprise Roland if Nei answered that she had done a crime to receive an exile as punishment, but instead, Nei answered that “I’ve never been a child of a forest.”

“What?” The unexpected answer surprised Roland. “You’ve never been a child of the forest? Does that mean…”

“I was raised by human. The people I’ve always known as parents are not a creature of the forest.” Nei paused for a while before looking at Roland. A little doubt in her voice, but her eyes were watching his straight. “I’ve never found any of my kind in Grassland, especially except you, Sir Roland. Can you tell me?”

Why are you not in the forest?

The unspoken question was echoing in his ears.

Roland took a deep breath, thinking about the long road from his forest; how he hated the smelling the scent of bare land; how he despised the smell of iron mixed with blood; how he detested bricked roads; how he hated Zexen.
He then remembered Sir Galahad and his fellow knights… Lady Chris…
He remembered his loyalty to the one he trusted…

“Because I exist for Zexen.” It was not a lie. It was a reason why he was had been sent away from the forest in the first place.

The conversation about their past ended right there. Nei didn’t ask for more and Roland did not speak any word since. They only stared at the horizon, where the sky met the sea.

It was dark. Roland offered to walk Nei back to her quarters. Nei smiled as an acceptance to the offer.

While strolling back, Nei shattered the silence with, “have you ever wonder, Sir Roland, how does it feel to be in the forest? How does it affect us? What kind a power does it have over us?”

Roland closed his eyes, a nostalgic view came into his mind, but he put it away by shaking his head slowly.

Nei never got her answer, but she didn't mind. Even though they were elves, they were not children of the forest to begin with. She felt a little bit of emptiness when she'd thought about that. That was why she didn't mind... she didn't want to dig up more and fell into a deeper abyss of questioning her identity.
She was sure Roland felt the same way too...

When they met again the day after, they talked about what was on Budehuc Times.

Vague description of sexual situations. Mention of incest.
Disclaimer: Papa to Mira series is Nanbara Ken's

01. Uniform

Takayuki was demanding and often cruel in satisfying his desire towards Kazuki’s body. He took Kazuki anytime and anywhere he wanted too. Kazuki himself was often confused how Takayuki could always find a secluded and unoccupied place to eventually make Kazuki under him; to make Kazuki want him more than anything else in the world. And he seemed to catch the right time too.

The intercourse was always pleasurable for both of them, although it was filled with the ‘hate’ confessions from both Kazuki and Takayuki… as always. But again, none of them minded…

Takayuki was demanding and often cruel. The proof was visible when they had finished their act of ‘love.’ Kazuki’s bottom was tingling with tickling pain; his body covered with love bites. But at least, those pain and marks didn’t need any money to heal.

Kazuki was staring at his uniform.

Takayuki was demanding and often cruel… Kazuki didn’t mind that, but he wanted Takayuki to at least, give him money to buy new uniform, every time the older tore Kazuki’s apart.

***

02. Jealousy

Mira thought that he knew everything about how adult worked on their romance, especially when his father had spent days and nights, ‘teaching’ him about it. With the ‘little knowledge’ from his father, he could imagine how teenage romance could be, but he couldn’t help to be fazed by the way Kazuki and Takayuki played cat and mouse in ‘their romance.’
How ‘jealousy’ worked in their little love affair confused him even more.

“Stay out from Mira, you pervert!” That was what Kazuki always said when he saw Takayuki too close Mira.

It was not like Takayuki had been seducing Mira… …well, Kazuki might be right that Takayuki had tried to lure Mira to bed, every time they had met.
After it had happened for some times, Mira had then realized that the school president was actually setting the trap to Kazuki, to coax Kazuki to have a round with Takayuki himself.

Takayuki’s jealousy was even weirder and scarier than Kazuki’s. If Kazuki’s head boiled every time he saw Takayuki with Mira, Takayuki’s possessiveness triggered every time he saw Kazuki too close with someone else. Different from Kazuki whose annoyance was soon launched in place, Takayuki’s anger would explode later, when he got a chance to be alone with Kazuki; torturing Kazuki with rounds of sexual fury, so Kazuki would remember who he belonged to… in spite of Kazuki’s defensive argue that the other man was just a friend. Takayuki wouldn’t listen.

Mira had accidentally seen one of Takayuki’s punishments one time, and had decided to run away before Takayuki could see him and pulled him into a threesome round of the punish-Kazuki-game.

After seeing how Takayuki and Kazuki interact in their ‘teenage romance,’ Mira was thankful he skipped ‘teenage romance’ and went straight to an ‘adult romance’

***

03. Embrace

All about dating! Hold hands – hug – kiss – make out – make love.
The front cover of a popular female teen magazine said that it was the right order of ‘what you should do first with your boyfriend?’

Kazuki pulled his eyes away from the magazine, not interested. He picked up the new edition of sports magazine and went to pay and set away to the road for Takayuki’s house.

He opened the first pages while waiting for the green sign to cross the road. The first few pages were reports on the latest matches of the Champion League and that was he’d been looking for. Apparently, the light turned green and Kazuki must put the magazine to his bag if he wanted to cross the road safely.

As he walked, his mind flied back to the front cover of the girls’ magazine. He and Takayuki had skipped the first two stages of holding hands and hugging. They went straight to kissing, making out, and making… having sex in one package. Had it been normal?

Kazuki laughed, realizing that they were not lovers in the first place. Of course the order in their relationship was not like what the teen magazine’s set of normal relationship stage. Takayuki never held Kazuki’s hands… no, once they had hold their hands together walking home, but they eventually let go before the act was seen by other’s. Takayuki never hugged him, except in when they were having their intercourse.

Hug. It was only a hug that Kazuki never received from Kazuki outside the bed.

When Takayuki’s house was in sight, Kazuki flipped the magazine’s pages once before putting it in his bag. He pressed the intercom asking for Takayuki, when he was in front of the main gate.

Takayuki came few minutes after, opening the gate for him.

“What’s the matter, my duckling?” Takayuki asked when Kazuki had not yet stepped in.

Kazuki watched at Takayuki’s hands and chest for a while. He had thought how it would feel if Takayuki had welcomed him with an embrace.

“Nothing.” Kazuki answered as he strolled in.

Of course Takayuki would never give him one.

***

04. Sunset

There was a reason why Takayuki still wanted working in student council although he was third year and should be retiring soon to prepare up coming exams. There was a reason why Takayuki still enjoyed working as president of the council although the works sometimes stressed him.

It was the beautiful view of sunset from outside the student council office’s window. Takayuki had always enjoyed that since he had been appointed a student council member. It was relaxing, peaceful, lovely.
The picture of the landscape even become more beautiful when he had started second grade, with Kazuki adding himself to be a part of it.

The setting sun and Kazuki playing in the soccer field. Takayuki saw the other soccer club members were like black silhouettes dancing with shining, supporting Kazuki as the main character in a play.

Takayuki had always enjoyed it for free. It had been a payment for him after a day’s hard work.

… Takayuki started smiling after the soccer club members had dismissed themselves for today, walking towards a little building that held club meeting rooms.

There was actually another reason why Takayuki still liked working in the student council even though it was time for him to retire and concentrate more on his studies… The smile turned into smirk as he imagined a tired Kazuki squirming under him, surrendered because the little duckling didn’t have any more energy to refuse.

He stood up. It was time.

***

05. Rumor

Mira had actually started to worry. He knew that his best friend and his step brother’s relationship had gone very far, but he didn’t see any sign that any of them were serious about the relationship. Especially from Takayuki’s side.
Mira wanted the best for both of them, especially for Kazuki who sometimes, looked so sad.

Mira decided that he should investigate.
He went to the student council room after checking that Takayuki wouldn’t be there at the time he visited. He asked his friend, Hideo, who was also a member of the student council, if Takayuki Utsunomiya had any relationship with anybody. He added that the reason he had asked because one of his friends from neighboring school had this crush on the student council president.

“None that I know.” Hideo’s answer was an answer Mira had been waiting.

Mira smiled and strolled back happily to his class.

In the other hand, Hideo started to think more about Takayuki. When he thought about it, Takayuki was awfully close to the student council president in the all-girls school nearby. He voiced his suspicion to another student council member, Kosuke.

“Are you sure? I think he’s just being friendly to her.” Kosuke said back to Takayuki.

When Kosuke watched Takayuki at their next meeting, he remembered that Takayuki had several times walked the girl home, but he thought that Takayuki had done it out of modesty.

His classmate, Shuji asked Kosuke what made him so look so grim, when Shuji caught him thinking about his theory of the student council president going out with a girl. Kosuke decided to tell Shuji.

Shuji then told his friend Masahiko, that their student council president Takayuki Utsunomiya was going out with Rika Takato, the student council president from the girl’s only high school. Masahiko then told Kyo… Kyo then spread the words to Shin’ichi… Shin’ichi then told…

When he heard the news from Ryo, Kazuki had been crushed, but it soon turned into anger of the new information he heard about Takayuki sleeping with another girl, and made the girl aborted their baby. Kazuki had disappointed hearing that Takayuki had someone else, but Takayuki didn’t need to abort the baby!

“Ouch!” Takayuki half yelled when Kazuki greeted his kiss with a bite. “What was that for?!”

“You murderer!” Kazuki shouted back. “How dare you kill your own child!”

Takayuki didn’t know if he should be angry or confused by the sudden remark.

***

06. Argument

Takayuki always failed to say that he actually loved Kazuki. He had said it couple of times after their sessions in bed, but Kazuki had been too tired to hear it and passed out before the later could give any answer. Kazuki would wake up the next morning not remembering anything about his confession.

Takayuki had said it once, when the both of them were in German. The both of them had been fully awake when he said it.
Would Kazuki believe it if he hadn’t added that it was a joke to tease Kazuki?

Now, Takayuki was again, saying that he loved Kazuki. His words were soon greeted by a Kazuki hardened expression. “You’re lying.”

“I am not,” but Takayuki’s denial was quickly countered by Kazuki saying that Takayuki was trying to once again trick him, and he would not fall into the same trap twice.

Kazuki would love to believe it. He had been wanted to hear and be convinced by Takayuki words. He had wanted to say that he also did love Takayuki. But he could never trust Takayuki. He had to be aware. He didn’t know what Takayuki had already prepared behind his sleeves.

Takayuki jaws clenched. He was angry of Kazuki’s cynicism. Takayuki pushed Kazuki to the bed, forcefully kissing the other. It was time to teach the duckling another lesson.

***

07. Milk

When they had been innocent children, Mira had said once to Kazuki that he had been drinking his father’s milk every morning. It took Kazuki several years to understand the true meaning of it. Now, Kazuki wondered if Mira still consumed the daily ‘milk’… and cursed that he shouldn’t have thought about it.

Kazuki stared at his breakfast. Toast, scrambled eggs… and milk. He didn’t know why he suddenly remembered the words Mira had said years back. He suddenly lost his appetite when he pictured the image of Mira and his father…

Kazuki skipped the breakfast and went straight to school, not bugging to drop by to Mira’s house. He didn’t want to see Mira or Kyosuke that entire day or he wouldn’t eat the whole day.

He didn’t expect Takayuki to ambush him at the school.

“Have you eaten your breakfast, little duckling?” Takayuki asked him between kisses.

Kazuki’s face paled, especially at the sudden mental image… the same one that he had that morning, but now picturing himself and the man in front of him. No, please don’t…

***

Endnote

The milk term exists in the story. I feel amused and disgusted every time I heard Kyosuke mentioning it.
A commercial from a local radio, Prambors, inspired me to do rumor.
Takayuki called Kazuki with ‘Hiyoko-chan,’ that literally means ‘chick’. But it would be strange to be used in English. (My chick? Oh no.) So I decided to use the freedom to translate it into ‘little duckling.’

Comments and critics are appreciated, especially English grammar critics. I had some people complained about my English grammar. But the complaints didn’t help me because they didn’t point where the mistakes were and how should I fix them.

Thank you for reading.

Not a king or president, those jobs had too much responsibility… because responsibility was something the only one he wanted to avoid.

Maybe a general of an army… yes, general on an army.
He would go to a country that was in peace. No rebellion inside and no bad relationship with another country. A country that was not in league with other countries that had political problems within the country or with any other country.
That way he could avoid war and could slack off all year.

Yes, that was a childhood dreams of him.

A little work would do.
Caesar then asked his father to have a teacher in sword training instead of mathematics. His father was surprised and angry saying that no one in Silverberg legacy had been a fighter. All of them had been famous strategist, tacticians of big wars and countries.

Caesar answered that time, that he hated war, and he would not be a strategist.

His father’s anger exploded after showing a confused face the moment before. If his mother hadn’t interfered, Caesar would have not gotten his dinner that night and couldn’t go out of his room for the rest of the week.

His mother also helped him to convince his father to give what their little boy had wanted…
“He’s still a child. He doesn’t understand anything. Just give him what he wants.” His mother had said to his father.

After some time of persuasion, his father finally agreed, with adding to his brother who had been present, that his son, Caesar Silverberg had been a big utter fool.

Albert didn’t given any reply, even any expression to answer their father’s remarks.

The next week, Caesar met his sword trainer and spent most of the day burning his calories, sweating, hurting, while trying to control his sword and shield. He finished the training that day, trying to hold his tears so his father wouldn’t laugh at him.
He needed to hold on a couple of years so his dream could be fulfilled.

… But it didn’t… and it wouldn’t…

Well, it would if Albert hadn’t entered his room that night, saying that a strategist, tactician, and a chancellor wouldn’t have to move any muscle in order to earn money. He explained that strategist had been a person who had always been sitting in his comfortable chair when all the knights had been fighting in the front line, dying. With some more tricks, a tactician could stop war without walking out from his room, and get paid for it.

Albert’s explanation had opened Caesar’s eyes.

The next day he had told his father he would quit the sword training and start learning under Apple.

Our new combination attack!”

“Wait a second.” Sigurd said, fingers went to massage his temple. “We already have a combination attack, Hervey. I can’t see what is wrong with it.” He stopped for a while before continuing, “And I can’t see why we have to make a new combination attack with a so… lame name.”

“Oh, come on!” Hervey argued back. “You know we deserve the name! No one in Island Nations can deny that Hervey and Sigurd from the Pirate’s Bands are the most handsome people in the army.”

Sigurd raised one of his eyebrows. “What a confidence you have.”

“Because I have almost the whole girls in our army backing my words!” Hervey replied proudly, hands akimbo.

How many is ‘almost’? Sigurd wanted to toss the words but he did not. He could not. No one could argue with Hervey in a time like this. Even though someone had a reasonable agreement to counter Hervey, the brown haired pirate would not likely listen.

“Besides, Lady Kika is planning a similar kind of attack with Jeane, Amelia, and Gretchen! What do you think they would name it? Beauty Attack?” Hervey tried to give him more persuasion to convince the man, resulting Sigurd with a headache imagining the leader of the Pirate’s Nest with some out of character moves.

Beauty Attack? Now he understand where Hervey got the name Pretty Boys Attack? “My goodness,” Sigurd muttered under his breath before spoke to Hervey. “Uh… I guess I’ll…”

Hervey’s voice cut Sigurd before he could finish his sentence. “Yes!” The other man sounded like he was screaming in joy. No, he was. “Now to get him to join us!”

Wait a minute… “Him?”

***

No wonder. Sigurd watched the man in front of him. Silver smooth hair and dark handsome eyes. The cold beauty that would make half of the female population gone to their knees.

“I don’t like it.” A cold answer for Hervey’s fiery request.

The man hated it. Now Sigurd knew that there was someone that would stop Hervey’s plan. It wouldn’t work if two of the three did not want to cooperate.

“Why not?” Hervey really really wanted Helmut to join their, no, Hervey’s plan of this Pretty Boy Attack. Sigurd knew that from the tone of his voice. “Come on! You’re the only one who can team up with us in this combination attack!”

Sigurd watched how Helmut’s disgusted eyes turned into amused ones. “I know I’m the only who deserve the last spot. But I don’t like the name.”

“Huh?” This time Hervey was not the only one who voiced confusion.

“Pretty Boys Attack was too lame for a name…” Helmut smiled. No. Smirked. The man was smirking. “How about Adonis Attack?”

Sigurd felt that the last gate of hope slammed shut in front of him.

If he remembered it now, he didn’t even feel a thing about it.

The second time was when Mathiu had thrown him out from the school. He had been furious, but determined to move along and seek a new way to survive.

The third time… he remembered it very well. One of his most trusted people had cheated behind his back. Shu had quickly planned a second plan to cover the whole mess, and had succeeded in humiliating that person. The taste of revenge had been sweet.
Since then, he believed in no one.

Yes, he knew the feeling of being stabbed from the back. He tasted more and much more after that, but he had not also put too much trust on anybody to feel deeply hurt by them.

He didn’t saw the fourth one coming. It came like an unwelcomed sweetness in his favorite black coffee. Only it felt like a total opposite; a bitter taste in his new comfortable life.

He had taken some time alone after receiving Apple and Sheena’s marriage invitation; a long break. He had stopped at Radat before moving on to Toran, mainly for taking a quiet time fishing. He had been thinking what made him feel the familiar sensation of being betrayed again.

After few hours without catching any fish, Shu had finally admitted that he had been longing for the girl, for quite a while. Now that the girl would be someone else’s he should think another way to bring himself back to the old self, the Shu who had had been comfortable amidst by wolves and lions who could eat him any time.

He had never thought the way though, but he would. The pain of deception would heal in time. It had to... and it had, long ago in the past, three times.

Then he had come to their wedding. Much to his satisfaction, everything had gone just like what he plotted in mind.

The fifth time. Shu sighed. He’d never thought that there would be a fifth time. He had not been betrayed by particular person, but there were loneliness in him that came out when the Jowston State Alliance had come to a peace. The country condition had been perfectly stable, so it would not be so much different if Shu let the position of the State’s chancellor go.

He then realized what he always needed… he needed to be needed.

Now it’s time for him to make a new plan.

When the door reopened, people whom he did not see entering, coming out. Sasarai wrinkled his eyebrows. It sure was strange.

Since the little chamber was located not far from the public teleportation device – the Blinking Mirror; he assumed that the small room was also another manifestation of teleportation. But what was the point in having two teleportation instruments in a very close range? Was it made so Viki wouldn’t loose his energy transporting people out of Budehuc Castle?

He decided to ask the girl about it.

“It’s something called aylayveytor.” Viki answered.

“Ay--- what?”

“Elevator!” The younger Viki then raised her voice, correcting the older one’s words with a sarcastic tone. She then lifted her face up to see the Bishop of Harmonia eye to eye. “It’s a mechanical transporting device that connects every floor in the castles. It saves your energy from climbing stairs. You enter, and then say which floor you want to go to, to Shizu. Then all you have to do is to wait for a few seconds, and you’ll arrive at your destination floor.”

“It sounds very practical.” Sasarai commented after the short explanation from younger Viki. “I wonder why the device has not reached the world yet.”

“Oh, you don’t want to know why.” Viki smirked unpleasantly, as if she was being secretive of something. “But it has been used several times in big wars like this.”

“I’ll tell you!” The older Viki suddenly said and continued her words in a silent whisper, almost inaudible. “It’s actually a torture chamber.”

“Torture chamber?” Sasarai’s raised his eyebrows. “The elevator?”

The younger Viki gave a disagreeable shout.

“I actually don’t know the details, but at there was also an eiluhvaytor at the Toran Liberation War. I’ve seen Luc coming out from it looking pale, muttering that it was hell.” Viki’s face showed panic while she shared his story. “That’s why I’ve never ever wanted to try it!”

“Was Luc really?” Sasarai showed more interest when his twin brother’s name came from Viki’s lips.

“It’s not really a torture chamber.” Younger Viki protested. “Riding an elevator makes a strange feeling inside your body. Some people who couldn’t stand the movement of the elevator preferred to take stairs instead. Although it would take more energy and time.”

Sasarai smiled. So Luc was traumatized by a mere transporting machine. This is interesting.

Sasarai decided to try this so called elevator.

…. … …

… And regretted it.

Sasarai came out from the elevator. One hand on the wall, holding his whole weight from collapsing; and one hand on his head, holding his head from exploding.

Riding on an elevator made his stomach and head hurt. As if the contents of the body was left out at the ground floor where he had first stepped in. The sensation was indescribable, in a bad way.

Luc was right.

“So how was it?” Viki appeared in front of him. It seemed that she teleported out of curiosity for the sake of seeing how elevator worked on Sasarai.

“It was hell.”

Caesar Silverberg was practically sleeping in his desk, on the test she had given fifteen minutes before.

She hated the fact that he could finish the questions she had thought about for two nights, in fifteen minutes. Her hard work was meaningless.

It made her remember Shu in their young days in Mathiu’s school.

Damn Shu and all naturally talented people in the world.

He never believed that his prayer could be answered, either now or sometime in the future. He didn’t even believe that The One up there did really exist.

There were a couple of reasons why he should not believe in His existence.

First, although Sasarai himself was a Bishop of Holy Harmonia, he was not a Bishop to serve the One and True God. He did not pray so God could give His blessings for him and the whole Harmonia. He did not sing hymns for His mercy and power. He didn’t ask Him to forgive his sins.

Sasarai and all the men and women in Holy Harmonia hierarchy lived to serve Great Hikusaak and the True Runes. He didn’t pray so things could happen; he learned to make things happen with his own power, his own magic. He was the one who gave blessings and help for people in Harmonia. He chanted for magic spells that helped power and miracles to happen. He forgave people sins and he asked for Hikusaak to forgive his sins.

Second, he was not created by God to begin with.

He was created by Hikusaak for a sole purpose, to be a container for True Earth Rune.

Hikusaak was his God and the True Rune was the only he could cling to, to survive, to live on.

Hikusaak and True Runes existed. He saw them, and felt their powers. There was no doubt for him to not believe in them.

… And now was Sasarai, standing in a building for a religious purpose, in one country he was invading. The building was abandoned, but he could still feel the aura of people coming there. He could see them gathering, singing hymns and odes to the One they called God, and praying, relying everything to the… what they called Almighty.

Dios called them and their faith as ‘rubbish,’ and Sasarai didn’t have any objections towards Dios’ comments.

Sasarai, himself, didn’t understand why they could depend their life on someone, something that they’d never seen before. How could they were so relaxed when the Harmonians had been attacking?

We didn’t suppose to attack innocent civilians… but those people who had been praying here, supposed to hear the war had been coming. The stupidest people supposed to know that they should run away when they heard the voices of death running towards them.

The people were not running away. They had stayed, praying, singing to their… this God of them when they’d supposed to save themselves.

The Harmonian Army. Sasarai didn’t know that such foolish people existed in the world… and where their God had been when His followers were accidentally slain by the power of the runes, the magic of his underlings…?

Sasarai took a deep breath.

… He didn’t feel guilty for killing the innocents. He felt pity instead.
He didn’t blame them for believing something. He blamed them for not helping themselves.

He then remembered Luc. Sasarai laughed sadly. Every time something, anything happened, he kept on remembering – or somehow connecting it to his lost twin.

Luc was a total opposite. He didn’t want to rest himself to the power of the Runes. Luc despised it, wanted to destroy it. He wanted to destroy the fate, the future foreordained by the Runes. He wanted to help himself so much that he defied fate. He relied on himself too much.

He pitied Luc too, his foolish little brother.
If only Sasarai had met and talked with Luc sooner… maybe something would change.

Luc could give him what he lacked, and he too, to Luc.

Praying was not too bad too. At least it could give more power to Luc, and more faith to the True Runes. If only he believed that the runes wouldn’t always destroy. There were so many cases of True Runes bearers still living with their sanity, although not happily… but they were surviving.

Sasarai looked at the marks of red covering the whole church, stained it with a faint smell of iron. The image of the scenery when they had first came in flashed in his mind. Sasarai had to hold himself from puking.

… … He closed his eyes, trying to erase the image from his mind. He took another deep breath and opened them again, while calming himself.

He then remembered Luc, again, in his weakness, buried deep in the Cyndar Ruins. Oh, how he wished him to be alive.

There was something in Sasarai that make him keep thinking about Luc, to keep on wishing, praying that Luc still be alive… then he could… he could… he could do what?

… … …

… Luc had died… Sasarai could do nothing.

Oh, maybe he could pray, but nothing would come up from it, not if he didn’t do something to make it happen. He could see the result in front of it.

No matter how hard he prayed, either to the Runes or to the God, nothing will happen.

“Sir Sasarai, the mass burial is completed.” Sasarai heard Dios’ voice calling. “Shall we proceed to the next town?”

Sasarai kept silent for a while. He then nodded. He walked out of the place after glancing to the space for the last time.

How matter hard he try, his prayers will remain unanswered.

Luc wouldn’t be revived… His brother wouldn’t be back… he would never; not now, not sometime in the future.
